Why are we trying to outwrestle an earthquake?
An earthquake releases energy equivalent to hundreds of nuclear explosions. No residential foundation can overpower those forces. Trying to build a foundation rigid enough to resist every movement is like trying to catch a 95-mile-per-hour fastball with your hand held perfectly still. Anyone who has ever played baseball knows the correct technique. When catching a fastball, you don’t stop the ball instantly. You move your glove with the ball, absorbing its energy over time. The ball is brought safely under control because its energy is managed rather than resisted. That simple principle became the inspiration behind the VR-1 Foundation System.
Engineering the Earth Instead of Fighting It
Traditional residential foundations rely on relatively small bearing points. During a major earthquake, enormous vertical, horizontal, and overturning forces become concentrated at these individual supports. When the supporting soil can no longer resist those concentrated loads, the foundation begins to shift, rotate, settle, or slide. The VR-1 Foundation System approaches the problem differently. Its patented geoformed footing creates a broad structural interface with the surrounding soil.
