Hawaiʻi’s Post-and-Pier Housing Crisis Highlights a Growing Structural Risk

Structural Problems Found In Some Santee Homes — KGTV 10News, February 12, 2012

About 700 homes in Santee, built by Princess Homes in the 1970s, are supported on jacks that are rusting and wearing. Sure Safe® founder Art Angelo, the foundation expert who alerted the City of Santee to the problem, was featured in the story.

Why are we trying to outwrestle an earthquake?

An earthquake releases energy equivalent to hundreds of nuclear explosions. No residential foundation can overpower those forces. Trying to build a foundation rigid enough to resist every movement is like trying to catch a 95-mile-per-hour fastball with your hand held perfectly still. Anyone who has ever played baseball knows the correct technique. When catching a fastball, you don’t stop the ball instantly. You move your glove with the ball, absorbing its energy over time. The ball is brought safely under control because its energy is managed rather than resisted. That simple principle became the inspiration behind the VR-1 Foundation System.
